Right. I’ve been thinking about this for a while so it’s about time I just bit the bullet and did something about it.
I’m going to start running.
There, I’ve said it now, on the internet and everything so I have to do it. Those of you well acquainted with this blog will know my history with weight and exercise has something of the ‘all or nothing’ approach about it. After a valiant effort in the lead up to our wedding when I was eating sensibly, going to Commando Park Training twice a week and Zumba twice a week, I did what I always seem to do (and what I promised myself I wouldn’t do this time); I ate lots of cake and pretty much stopped exercising altogether.
I need to get back on the wagon, back in my exercise groove. I really do enjoy it, if I can just get enough motivation to get of my arse and do something! I do enjoy Zumba so I’m planning on getting back into that next week. The Commando Park Training, although very effective, really wasn’t my cup of tea. Paying £5 to have a man shout at me and make me do sit-ups in the mud really isn’t my idea of fun. That said, as a part of the sessions we did quite a lot of running – some short sprints up hills (some times backwards!) and some slightly longer distances. I’ve always said I’m not a runner. I can dance or do Zumba for hours if you ask me to but I would struggle to even run for a bus. But over the couple of months I was training in the park my running capacity did start to get better. I’ve looked at some other fitness classes and there are a few things I’d like to try (TRX maybe) but none of the classes are at very convenient times for me, and they’re not cheap.
Which is where running comes in. Running is free. I can do it whenever suits me for as long or as little time as I like. And it’s something that me and ‘Mr Wiz’ can do together. So on Saturday morning we’re going to go and buy him some running trainers and then we’re going to give it a try. We’ve worked out a route from our house which is mostly on cycle paths. It’s just over 2.5 miles (or 4.2 km if you’re that way inclined) and whilst I don’t imagine we’ll be able to run the whole distance to start with we can mix running with walking slowly moving from more walking than running to the other way round until we can run the whole way.
My friend Claire has taken up running lately and she loves it. My other friend Shauna is co-creator of Up & Running Online which has developed e-courses for runners of all abilities. I was actually tempted to sign up for their 5k course but it runs for 8 weeks, and we’ll be in America for 3 of them. My new plan is to give it a go by ourselves and then maybe sign up for the 10k course in the autumn if I like it. My other thought is that we should aim to do a 5K race sometime in September. There are a couple of fun runs near by that we could enter and maybe that will give us the motivation to stick with it. Who knows we might even take our running shoes to America with us!
So there you have it. Running it is. No doubt there’ll be an update when we’ve managed to get out and actually do it for the first time. Wish us luck!
